  • re: abjj

  • Cos I’m rationing my movies this year, I deliberetly skipped this one because of the so-so reviews I read online. Will catch up with this one when it gets a DVD release- I really liked The Secret of the Grain!

I’ve only seen two films so far (skipped Post Mortem cos I had the flu). Carlos- entertaining and accomplished filmmaking but nothing particularly revealtory (pretty much sums up my view of Assayas’ films). The 5hr+ screening was inevitably exhausting in the end (the film is cinematic, but it’s more suitable for home viewing), but I was much more interested in the geopolitics and history (and wished they delved more in it) than the ‘flashy’ operations (critics have overpraised the OPEC seige in my opinion). Assayas and Edgar Ramirez did an excellent job in portraying Carlos as an A-grade asshole though.

The Strange Case of Angelica- last year’s Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl was a genuine surprise for me and my first Manoel de Oliveira film. The careful framing, setups, theatrical form and lighting as well as the vein of absurdity and mystery are still present, but I was rather non-plussed by the supernatural theme. Still, worth a watch, particularly when someone this old can still make a quality film.

Got 3 more screenings left (any maybe Essential Killing/Devils on the Doorstep/How I Ended This Summer/La Dolce Vita if work/other commitments permit). Hopefully I could spend more time with the Kiarostami retrospective and one or two 桂治洪 flicks (they should be showing an uncut version of 蛇殺手, compared with the out of print IIB version on DVD).

Seen any must-see-in-cinema films or surprises that you would like to recommend? And did you manage to catch Eternity/The Journals of Musan/Winter Vacation/Rubber/Bleak Night/Outbound/Tuesday, After Christmas/Honey/Morgen/the Mendoza and Apichatpong’s segments in Quattro? Sorry for being so eager in my questioning, but after all you do have a pass, which is a bit like having an all-you-can-eat buffet that lasts for a fortnight :D

  • re: The Daydreamer
wow, thanks for your lengthy comment~ actually i skipped Carlos cos I was not feeing very well that day, but I’ll be going to the coming screening of “The Strange Case of Angelica”, so more about it later~

Out of all the films you mentioned, i’ve seen “The Journals of Musan”, “Morgen” and “Honey” only~ “Journals” is a realistic film about a north korean defector that slightly touches on religion, but it’s not very impressive~ “Morgen” is somewhat underwhelming, it lacks the absurdist and satirical charm of romanian new wave films~ “Honey” was screened in last year’s hkaff and it’s good! if you haven’t seen it you really should~ I intend to write about this director but I still haven’t got the energy to do so~

As for the films I’ve seen, the ones I recommend are actually the ones I’ve already written about~ as for the ones I saw this weekend: “Oki’s Movie” is interesting as expected, “Curling” is something like a realistic (and atmospheric) version of “Dogtooth” set in Quebec, it’s strangely charming~ I saw quite a lot of documentaries, will be seeing more features next week~

  • Thanks for the advice from both of you! Was about to approach someone on Facebook to buy her ticket for Honey, but then read this description on the HKIFF website: ‘因拷貝關係,放映質素未如理想,謹此致歉!’ Guess that’s a big NO then.

  • re: abjj
Yes I saw “Four Times” last night~ I was wondering how did he got that long take performance of the dog??

    re: The Daydreamer
It’s a very visual film, so I guess it’s a no~ anyway the rip floating around the internet is not bad though~ =]

    (Warning – SPOILER ALERT!!)

“Honey” is really a good ending of the trilogy that unlocks every secrets about the main character – his solitude, his sentiments, his clinches and his motivations – that lead to the 2nd and 3rd part of this series. I particularly like how the director builds up the relationship between the main character and his father, and how he got lost in the woods. That really imply where his life ends into and finally saved himself during his return to hometown for his mother’s death.

  • gar i guess you are right about the charcoal.

  • I’ve encountered bad prints in the past: a bleached and bleeding HK screening (2009?) of Kon Ichikawa’s An Actor’s Revenge, and a messy and unwatchable (yet somehow I stayed for the whole film) print of Straw Dogs. But these are for repertory programmes; to have a poor print for an acclaimed and recent film is rather disappointing (I didn’t go in the end).

I’m well aware of the great reviews that The Four Times has received, but the screening last Friday at Langham was sold out and I have a rather deep aversion of the City Hall theatre (poor lighting, proportionally tiny screen, my favourite position at the front rendered useless), along with the Space Museum hall (worst venue imo). Guess it’s my loss then.

Saw an appropriate double bill today: The Mummy, The Night of Counting of Years, a beautiful restoration (you can download a VHS copy here) of a strong debut blending mysticism, family ties, history, national and cultural identity, ending with a memorable finale. It’s not a masterpiece (at least for us non-Arabs), but the composed and thoughtful direction really hints a director with a lot of potential (sadly this was the only feature film by him).

But the real highlight for me was Nostalgia for the Light, the first great film that I’ve seen this year (admittedly I’ve have’t seen much for the past 3 months). ‘Human existence is tiny compared to the grand order of things’ is bit of a poetic cliche, but how Patricio Guzman can make a documentary/essay film about the importance of history and memory, collective amnesia, the relative idea of the past, existence, trauma and catharsis and the search for truth, all colliding within a single location, single event and single nation, is simply astonishing. It is the must-see of this festival (even if the last screening is at the Space Museum :D).

agree with Daydreamer, the Nostalgia for the Night is really a must-see.

  • gNo Gravatar

sorry typo..is Nostalgia for the Light :P

  • re: g
I am waiting to see the trilogy again some time later~ I’ll being writing something, let’s discuss it afterwards~ and yes, “Nostalgia for the Light” is profound!!

    re: abjj
“The Four Times” 像 姜文?

    re: The Daydreamer
I am quite surprised by “The Mummy”, it’s very subtle and undramatic~ The guy sitting next to me dozed off several times, and I don’t really blame him~ And yes, I love “Nostalgia for the Light” too, it’s a masterpiece, easily the best I’ve seen so far~
